Altar Servers play a key role during Mass. Those who are in third grade and older are invited to become altar servers. Altar servers are mature in understanding their responsibilities and carry them out well and with appropriate reverence. Responsibilities include carrying the cross, the processional candles, holding the book for the priest celebrant when he is not at the altar, carrying the incense and censer, presenting the bread, wine, and water to the priest during the preparation of the gifts or assisting him when he receives the gifts from the people, washing the hands of the priest, and assisting the priest celebrant and deacon as necessary.
